With as many science fiction novels as have been written about time travel and the number of movies that include or reference the ability to move forwards and backwards in time, we can certainly assume that many people are interested in this idea. The reasons for going backwards in time are many. Some people want to change the present and others want to see what really happened back then. Others feel a calling to days gone by- a desire to experience life in the past. Certainly some of this (a desire to live in the past) is based on a romantic notion of what times were like then. Living in times that were simpler-whether because cities were more human-scale, or because technology wasn’t so ever-present, or that people had different freedoms, or there were still vast expanses left to explore is all based on an idea of what happened in the “good old days.”
While western wear does not allow a person to time travel, per se, there is the reality that western apparel is straight out of those good old days, in many ways. Cowboy boots have looked similar since they first began making them- no major changes have been made because the boots were specifically designed to meet the needs of those men riding the cattle drives in the late 1860s. Rodeo-styled boots are slightly different, but they too haven’t changed much over the years. And, while modern day cowboys live an entirely modern life (yes, they have cell phones and laptops out there, you know!) there are certain elements that have not changed and will not change (because riding a horse can really only be done while sitting on its back and fence repair is fence repair, regardless what the fence is made of).
It used to be very popular to summer on ranches where the guests would have a fair amount of free time and access to leisure activities, but they would also have chores that they did around the ranch. By heading out for a rustic vacation and donning cowboy apparel, people were able to relax away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives while being active and engaged. As you might guess, quite a few guests came back to work summers, like many teenage boys who found the freedom of being out in the open and working with animals a very enjoyable way of life.
